Coach Allen was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She is the youngest of eight children, and her earliest memories include playing sports or watching her siblings play. Coach Maria played basketball, volleyball, and softball beginning in grade school. She attended Regina High School in Detroit and continued to play all three sports. Although she played all three sports, she spent the majority of her time playing basketball. She was a shooting guard and made the Varsity Team her freshman year. Coach Maria was privileged to play with this team in the Michigan State Finals. After four years of playing on her high school team and club teams, she earned a scholarship to Siena Heights University to play both volleyball and basketball for her university. Playing on University Teams taught Coach Maria lessons on goal setting, resilience, determination, and the importance of creating lasting friendships with teammates. Coach Maria earned her teaching degree from Siena Heights and became an elementary teacher. She moved to British Columbia in 2000. She is married and has four children who are involved in a variety of sports. She taught at Holy Trinity, St. Matthews, and is currently a Grade Two teacher at Star of the Sea School. Coach Maria has been coaching various sports including basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track, since moving to B.C. Coach Maria has led many of these teams to playoffs as well as Championships. She coached basketball for the Y during the 2021 season with Coach Emily and is excited to coach the Elevate U12 Girls Team with her best friend. She also coaches at Hoops Night. Coach Maria loves teaching and coaching and feels blessed to be able to share her talents and her passion for sports with youth. She understands all the opportunities that team sports can provide for a happy, healthy future.
